Unnatural Sky

"After his strange outburst, my friend races inside and leaves me standing on the deck next to the lifeboat. I am briefly irritated by his manner but my head is still woozy from our smoking and I soon feel tiredness take me over. I have, however, promised to wait and so I do.

It takes me a minute or so to notice the icy chill. It nibbles away at my exposed hands and face and I resent being outside. Our ship has long stopped sailing for the night and the air is oddly still. As I stand I notice the moonlight on my hands has an unusual tinting. I turn, at once, to examine the source but I cannot find the moon anywhere in the vast sky. Instead, above me lies an oppressive pitch black mass with not a single star.

At sea level, there is a vile green mist rising from the water like foxfire in a bog. My dear, I imagine it to be an illusion caused by the aurora borealis but the scene makes me shiver nevertheless."
